I think the biggest inspiration for my path into leadership is a desire to really make a meaningful difference, Dr. Santarvis says. “When I think about what led me to this path, I recognize it as a desire to make a positive difference in education and create an environment that promotes accessibility, inclusivity, and excellence.” He has led multi-million dollar initiatives and launched programs to expand access to education throughout his career. “Each role has heightened my commitment to transformative leadership, ” he says “It’s less about finding a place at the table and more about creating a table in education for progressive growth.” His emphasis on change and impact highlights the way he uses each position as a stepping stone toward broader, long-term goals in education.
Faith as Framework to Serve
At a time when acceleration may diminish principle, Dr. Santarvis innovative point of view stands strongly on the core values of educational institutions. “Innovation should enhance and expand values and not supplant them,” he counsels. In his work on some of these institutions Saylor Academy, Cornell, or Excelsior University, for example he enhanced online learning landscapes by opening up opportunities in education while losing nothing in rigor. He continues, “Real innovation is aligned with the institution’s mission and values,” envisioning that innovation would be a bridge in the way of sustaining and impacting these values. It would be, for Dr. Santarvis, this balance between progress and tradition that is the cornerstone of effective educational leadership. “Faith impacts all aspects of my work. It reminds me to lead compassionately,” he says. He describes how faith is the foundation of his leadership as a pastor and educator in fostering a culture of service and commitment to uplifting others. “My faith instructs me to think about leadership holistically, which means that I focus on the well-being of the community and guided by the principles of compassion,” he adds.
