Dilip K. Prasad

Founder, Spermotile

Two of the fastest-growing industries at the frontier of innovation are AI and healthcare. The application of complex algorithms and machine learning models with AI in healthcare is facilitating medical decision-making, improving diagnosis, and tailoring treatment. This intersection between AI and healthcare has led to early identification of disease, better hospital management systems, and a new drug development life cycle reduction. It also moves into robotics, health monitoring systems, and telemedicine to further improve access and efficiency in delivering healthcare. Beyond that, AI is now a participant in sustainable technologies that develop ecologically friendly solutions, minimize the consumption of energy, and drive research on environmental matters. Continued growth in these industries offers much promise for transformative changes that will improve quality of life and address some of the most pressing global health and environmental challenges. Dilip K. Prasad is a leading authority in artificial intelligence (AI) and healthcare with an honorary doctorate in entrepreneurship. Featured in Stanford’s Top 2% Scientists, with more than 150 papers to his credit, he has penned three books and filed multiple patents. Dilip has raised €27 million for research and leads international collaborations in 16 countries. His most notable awards include Distinguished Researcher of the Year in Robotics & AI and Visionary Leader of the Decade in Healthcare Technology.

Humble Beginning: Academic Pursuits and Industry Experience

Dilip’s story starts from the bottom 10% of the economic stratum. His childhood was marked by crime and violence, spending most of his time in slums. He had almost no exposure, guidance, or resources in his childhood. He was clueless about what lay open to him where the IITs were, much less entrance exams like IIT JEE. It was not until just eight months before his high school exams that he heard of IIT and the academic opportunities it presented. Dilip was determined to break free from these circumstances.

Since he was the first one in his community to venture into a career in science, there was no precedent for success. He therefore moved at a much slower pace than most of his peers and relied on pure willpower, trial and error, and “brute force” to guide his academic and professional journey. Still, it would lay the foundation for resilience and work ethic. Dilip did his B.Tech in Computer Science from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, which he completed in 2003. IIT proved to be the turning point in life for him; it gave him the kind of exposure and learning he had always wanted. He worked for five years in the industry after finishing the degree, which made him gain experience while working with world-class technology leaders such as Philips, Mediatek, IBM, and Infosys. Those stints helped him understand the landscape of technology up close and in person, finally fine-tuning his skills with real-world applications in AI and computer science.

However, his desire for knowledge was far from satisfied. He soon realized that he wanted to explore deeper into research and academic fields. This led him to pursue a Ph.D. at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and he completed his doctorate in 2013. During his Ph.D., he worked on AI, computer vision, and sustainable technologies again, areas that would define much of his professional work. His academic excellence in these fields and contributions to AI came in for recognition when he was awarded an honorary doctorate in entrepreneurship by the University of Azteca, Mexico, in 2024.

Key Personal Traits That Have Shaped His Journey and Success

Dilip credits his success to three key personal qualities: perseverance, curiosity, and a “just do it” approach. His perseverance allowed him to stay focused on his long-term goals, even when faced with significant challenges in both research and industry. It was this determination that enabled him to overcome obstacles and make significant contributions to AI and healthcare. His curiosity and passion for learning have kept him always exploring new fields of innovation. Whether it be immersing deep into artificial intelligence or sustainable technologies, Dilip’s curiosity has pushed him to remain ahead of the edge in these fields.

Lastly, Dilip’s “just do it” mentality has been central to his success. He doesn’t believe in overthinking or waiting for the perfect moment to act. For him, it’s about turning ideas into action and executing them effectively. This approach has enabled him to bring his visionary concepts to life, creating real-world impact through innovation. Dilip’s ideals are rooted in the desire to make a meaningful impact through innovation. His professional values revolve around the creation of transformative solutions that can address real-world challenges. Especially passionate about the application of AI in healthcare, he believes technology can significantly improve lives in this sector. His vision also extends to sustainable technologies, where AI can help create more environmentally friendly solutions.

As a professional, he maintains the highest standards of excellence in his work. He values learning and views adaptability as the most important trait relevant to changing times. Inclusive and collaborative environments have been hallmarks that define his career be it in the academic field or the entrepreneurial world. He always nurtures young talent, sharing knowledge and contributing to the entrepreneurial ecosystem’s growth.

From Overcoming Challenges to Shaping a Future of Innovation and Impact

The toughest obstacles Dilip K. Prasad faced in his career originated from his challenging upbringing. Growing up in a disadvantaged environment, he lacked the resources and guidance that many of his peers had. This made it difficult for him to be aware of academic opportunities, such as prestigious entrance exams, until much later in life. His journey was delayed by these gaps in knowledge, and he often had to navigate obstacles without the support systems others had access to. However, Dilip’s commitment to learning and self-improvement helped him overcome these challenges. His determination to better his circumstances and succeed despite the odds played a crucial role in his eventual success. One important turning point happened when he was 34 years old: six months spent at Harvard, MIT, and Stanford Business School as a Kauffman Fellow in 2011. A life-changing experience, it brought clarity about what he truly wanted from his career and life. He defined his vision of the future in those few months and looked to push the boundaries of academia and industry. Those months of thinking and learning became the launchpad for the big goals he pursued thereafter, leading to more influence in his career and innovation direction.

Moving forward, he aims to drive advancements in AI and healthcare innovation. In the immediate future, he looks forward to working on AI-based solutions that make sustainable technologies better, advanced medical devices, and contributions to the life sciences sector. He is going to seek greater collaborations across the world and more significant funding to support the projects. He is also very keen on mentoring the minds of tomorrow that will lead technology and healthcare in the right direction. Dilip will play a very important role in filling the gap between research conducted at universities and applications in real industry. He will ensure that cutting-edge technologies are developed but also put to practical use in solving some of the biggest problems facing mankind. His long-term vision is to create solutions that can impact people’s lives and create a long-lasting positive impact on science, technology, and society at large.
